Tropic Lightning, Joint Partners Set the Theater for JPMRC 27-01

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii – Combat credibility begins long before the first round is fired. It starts with disciplined preparation, setting the theater, and establishing the lines of communication necessary to fight and win in a complex archipelagic environment.

The division-level Combined Arms Rehearsal on Nov. 1, brought U.S. Army Soldiers of the 2nd Mobile Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, alongside joint and multinational partners, into the reception, staging, and onward integration phase of Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center (JPMRC) Rotation 27-01.

Before any troops move out to the training areas, commanders and international partners gathered to walk through the upcoming operation step-by-step. Building this shared understanding is the crucial first step to bring diverse forces from across the globe together into one cohesive team.

"Today’s rehearsal is a great opportunity to get everyone, to include our joint and foreign partners on the same page with what we plan to happen," said Maj. Gen. Jeff VanAntwerp, commanding general of the 25th Infantry Division and U.S. Army Hawaii.

VanAntwerp compared it to Mike Tyson famously saying that ‘everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.’

He concluded that beyond understanding the plan, it’s important to understand the commander’s intent – the purpose, key tasks, and desired end state.

“[That] is the real objective. We expect the plan to change, and rehearsals like the one today help us adapt quickly to those changes to ensure that we still win,” said VanAntwerp

While the overarching strategy relies on convergence, the 2nd Mobile Brigade is actively preparing for the close battle. These Soldiers are gearing up to seize, retain, and exploit decisive terrain, on both Oahu and the Island of Hawaii.

"Our Soldiers are ready for the close battle," said Col. Ari Martyn, commander of the 2nd Mobile Brigade. "We are demonstrating our ability to fight, endure, and strike in the most demanding archipelagic and jungle environments on earth."

Behind the scenes of the arriving infantry battalions, a massive logistical network is already operating to sustain the force. At Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, U.S. Army riggers and logisticians with the 8th Theater Sustainment Command working seamlessly alongside both the 11th Airborne Division and our U.S. Marine Corps partners, rigging heavy equipment and container delivery systems for future airdrops and resupply.

"Endurance carries the fight across time and distance," said Lt. Col. Adan Cazarez, chief of public affairs for the 8th Theater Sustainment Command.

This unseen work builds the endurance required for distributed operations. By securing these critical supply lines, logisticians ensure the maneuver forces can project combat power and maintain a relentless tempo across the island chain.

"By integrating our aerial delivery and maritime transport capabilities with our joint partners early, we ensure the maneuver forces have the supplies they need to maintain continuous pressure throughout the exercise," said Cazarez

Over the coming days, this logistical backbone will expand the brigade's operational reach. Army watercraft, including logistics support vessels, are loading tactical vehicles at Waipio Point for maritime transit to the Big Island. Simultaneously, a joint airbridge is staging to rapidly push troops and critical payloads directly into Kona.

This distributed access and mobility sets the stage for the division's strike capabilities. With a secure network in place, the joint force is postured to rapidly deploy long-range precision fires, such as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), and combat aviation assets to austere locations, extending the commander's reach.

Throughout November, JPMRC 27-01 brings together approximately 7,000 personnel, including allies and partners from Singapore, the Republic of Korea, France, New Zealand, Japan, and the Maldives. As forces finish their preparations and push toward the training areas for the beginning of force-on-force operations on Nov. 7, the focus remains on building a lethal, combat-ready force capable of operating seamlessly as one combined joint team of teams.
